How to Get Loud, Timely Severe Weather Alerts on Your Phone

by | Jul 18, 2025 | Company News, Personal Safety

When every second counts, your phone should speak up.

At JMX Risk Management Consultants, we believe preparedness is the cornerstone of protection. Whether you’re managing a facility, overseeing a public event, or simply trying to keep your family safe at home, receiving severe weather alerts quickly and clearly can make all the difference.

But here’s a critical detail: not all phones are set up to notify users properly. Many devices silence or limit emergency alerts—especially if users have previously opted out of government or AMBER alerts. If you’re not hearing warnings for flash floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes, it’s worth double-checking your settings.

Here’s how to ensure your phone gives you the loud, persistent alerts you need during extreme weather.

📱 How to Enable Severe Weather Alerts on iPhone

  1. Set Location Access for the Weather App
  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Privacy & Security
  • Select Location Services
  • Scroll to Weather
  • Choose Always
  • Toggle Precise Location ON

  1. Enable Notifications for the Weather App
  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Notifications
  • Scroll to Weather
  • Toggle Allow Notifications ON
  • Turn on Time Sensitive Notifications
  • Optional: Enable Announce Notifications to have Siri read alerts aloud

If you have an Apple Watch (cellular or paired), these alerts will also ring through—even if your iPhone is out of reach or locked.

  1. Turn On Alerts in the Weather App Itself
  • Open the Weather app
  • Tap the three-line icon (bottom right)
  • Tap the three-dot icon (top right), then Notifications
  • Tap Allow > then confirm again by tapping Allow
  • Toggle ON Severe Weather Alerts and Next-Hour Precipitation Alerts
  1. Enable Government Emergency Alerts
  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Notifications
  • Scroll to the bottom under Government Alerts
  • Make sure Emergency Alerts and Public Safety Alerts are toggled ON

Note: These alerts override Silent mode but may not break through Sleep Focus unless you’ve allowed Time-Sensitive Notifications in Focus settings.  **Be sure to reach out to your phone carrier with any questions or concerns.

🤖 How to Enable Severe Weather Alerts on Android

Android settings vary by manufacturer, but the general steps are:

  1. Check Your Emergency Alerts Settings
  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Safety & Emergency (or search for Emergency Alerts)
  • Tap Wireless Emergency Alerts
  • Enable the following:
  • Allow Alerts
  • Severe threats
  • Extreme threats
  • Public safety messages
  1. Make Sure You’re Up to Date
  • Update to the latest version of your phone’s software
  • Ensure your phone is connected to a mobile network (not just Wi-Fi)

While emergency alerts are designed to override silent or Do Not Disturb modes, this may not work on all Android devices—check your settings for compatibility. **Be sure to reach out to your phone carrier with any questions or concerns.

📲 Third-Party Apps That Can Help

If you want added protection—or your device doesn’t reliably push alerts—consider supplementing your phone with a trusted weather alert app.

Storm Shield

  • Available on iOS and Android
  • Offers tornado, hurricane, thunderstorm, flood, and winter storm alerts
  • Uses voice and push notifications that can override Silent mode
  • Location-specific alerts reduce false alarms

American Red Cross Emergency App

  • Available on iOS and Android
  • Customizable alerts from NOAA
  • Allows you to monitor multiple locations
  • Unique sounds for different alert types
  • Note: May not override Do Not Disturb like Wireless Emergency Alerts

Stay Alert. Stay Ready.

Emergency alerts are more than just notifications—they’re life-saving warnings. Whether you’re protecting a property, planning an event, or managing your own household’s safety, taking five minutes to check your settings could give you critical minutes in a real emergency.
